California State Colleges for Film in California

In the state of California there are numerous state universities. When it comes to offering degrees and training in the film industry, there is no better place to go than the home of Hollywood itself. Throughout California, there are numerous state universities that offer hands-on training in film production, screenwriting and other film disciplines.

    • When people hear Los Angeles, they automatically think of Hollywood. What better place to have an accredited film school than in the heart of Hollywood itself? That is just what California State University in Los Angeles provides. Known as the Cal State LA Studio, students can apply for their film program and take courses in television production, screenplays, writing scripts, television announcing and even camera editing. Students that are interested in entering the film industry directly after college are offered the opportunity to take a direct-study course where students create their own film project that can be used later in their professional portfolio. Upon graduation, students can receive a bachelor's of arts in film. Any student interested in joining the film school at Cal State LA has to apply to the school directly through their admissions office.

    California State University, Fullerton

    • At California State University in Fullerton, California, students can enter into the department of Radio, TV and Film. Here students can enter into different areas of the film industry by learning hands-on with recording, editing, screenplays, and choreography. Students are entered into different film industries such as wireless, cable television, satellite, broadcast shows, digital and interactive media sources. Upon graduation, students will receive a bachelor's of arts in Radio-TV-Film in about four years. Some courses students can expect to take during their bachelor's degree are TV Scriptwriting, Language of Film, Radio Production, Sound Design for Film, and Directing Film and TV.

Here students can enter into the cinema and television arts program to receive a bachelor's degree in Electronic Media Management, Film Production, Media Theory and Criticism, or Multimedia. Students are provided with hands-on training from industry professionals that include screenplay theories, script writing and overall film production. Each year there is a senior student film showcase put on by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in North Hollywood that the University encourages their senior students to enter.

    • Located in Long Beach, California, is the Film and Electronic Arts Department at the University of California. Here students can receive an associate's or bachelor's degree in Film and Electronic Arts, Theory and Practice of Cinema, or Film and Video Production. Students can also obtain a Master of Arts in Dramatic Writing from the school. Hands-on training will be provided to students through courses in film and television production, editing, and screenwriting courses. The University offers yearly student showcases such as the Advanced Documentary Showcase that encourages students from the film school to submit their own documentaries to display.
