The University of Memphis offers musical education through the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, founded in 1912. The school offers the following programs: Bachelor of Music, artist diploma, Master of Music, Doctor of Musical Studies and Doctor of Philosophy. Each of these programs has a number of specializations that students can pursue, spanning the fields of composition, performance and musicology, among others. To be admitted into one of the programs, students must audition, meeting different requirements depending on the instrument they play.
Rhodes College offers students an undergraduate degree majoring in music, as well as the option of earning a minor in the area. Students are required to take both musicianship courses, starting in general courses about music, as well as performance courses for particular instruments and as part of an ensemble. The college offers a number of ensembles, including choral, jazz and orchestral, which practice weekly and perform several times during the year.
The Visible School offers students a chance to pursue both a musical education and a religious experience, focusing on academic performance and spirituality. The college offers modern music, music business and media production programs. Students in the modern music program specialize according to their instrument or type of performance. The school also allows students to earn a minor if they wish to pursue more than one program or specialization, though this has to be approved. The college is interdenominational.
LeMoyne-Owen College offers students a Bachelor of Arts in music degree through the school's Fine Arts and Humanities Division. The college offers courses in areas such as music theory, music history, applied music, sacred music, jazz studies and composition. It also offers a variety of ensembles, including ones for classical and contemporary jazz, African drumming and singing. Students are also required to perform in recitals and have the option of studying music recording and production.
