Colleges in California for Music & Math

California has several schools which are renowned for their mathematics and music departments. Some California universities, such as Stanford University, may have an excellent math department yet offer relatively few musical courses. Other universities that specialize in music such as the San Francisco Conservatory of Music may not offer a degree in mathematics.
  1. University of Southern California, Mathematics

    • The mathematics department at University of Southern California (USC) offers undergraduate degrees and graduate degrees at both the masters and Ph.D. levels. Undergraduate degrees offered at USC include a B.A. and B.S. in mathematics, a B.A. and B.S. in computational mathematics and a B.S. in economic mathematics. Undergraduates can also choose from two accelerated degree programs that combine a B.A. and M.A. in mathematics or a B.A. and M.A. in economic/mathematics and finance. Graduate programs include an M.A., M.S or PhD in applied mathematics, an M.A. or PhD in mathematics and a M.A. in statistics.

    University of Southern California, Music

    • The University of Southern California Thornton School of music includes many diverse music programs. Prospective students can choose from 18 different majors, some of which include television scoring, choral music, jazz studies and musicology. The Thornton School of Music describes itself as "conservatory-style education with the benefits of studying at a leading research university." Most of the music programs offer degrees from the B.A. to PhD levels.

    California State University, Northridge Mathematics

    • Cal State Northridge offers several options for potential math majors. Undergraduates can choose either a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science program, each with several options. Graduate students can earn a master's of science with an option of mathematics or applied mathematics. The mathematics department at Northridge has 37 full-time faculty members. About half of the graduate students pursuing degrees in mathematics are supported by faculty grants.

    California State University, Northridge Music

    • The music department at Cal State Northridge is particularly well known for its jazz studies program. Northridge's jazz ensembles are often invited to perform at the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival. Undergraduates can choose a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science in music. The former focuses on the music industry while the latter is performance oriented. New music students must pass an audition and take music theory and piano placement exams.

    University of California, Berkeley Mathematics

    • The mathematics department at the University of California, Berkeley is one of the most renowned in the U.S. Since 1925 it has almost consistently been ranked in the top 10 universities by the American Council of Education. Undergraduate students can choose to study mathematics or applied mathematics. A master's degree is available in mathematics and PhD programs are available in mathematics and applied mathematics. Each year UC Berkeley hosts the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition for undergraduate math students. More than 4,000 students take part in the annual competition.

    University of California, Berkeley Music

    • The department of music at UC Berkeley is well known for its musicology and ethnomusicology programs. Undergraduates can earn a bachelor of arts in music with an option in music performance, music technology and music history. The graduate program offers master's and PhD degrees in music history, ethnomusicology and composition.
