California Colleges for Phlebotomists

In addition to passing a certification examination, the California Department of Public Health requires at least 80 hours of class training and practice from an approved program to become a newly certified phlebotomist. Aspiring phlebotomist have a diverse mixture of regional and institutional choices when deciding where to acquire training in California.
  1. Bay Area

    • The Bay Area hosts a large number of urban phlebotomy programs and the perk of convenient public transportation for the commuting student. Contra Costa County houses Antioch's Contra Costa Medical Career College, Pleasant Hill's Health Career College and a Heald College campus in Concord. Students that prefer to study in an integrated hospital and education setting may be interested in Richmond's Kaiser Permanente School of Health Science-Phlebotomy. Walnut Creek's Phlebotomy Plus is a small vocational program focused solely on phlebotomy for a more specialized approach while North Bay's College of Marin is an option for those on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. Two big-city options for phlebotomy students are San Francisco's Bay Area Medical Academy and City College of San Francisco.

    Southern California

    • Los Angeles County boasts the most phlebotomy program options and includes Long Beach City College, the state's largest public institution to offer such training. Los Angeles residents can also attend the California School of Health Science, California Technical Education College, Central Nursing College or the Family Health Services at National University. North Hollywood offers the Kaiser Permanent of Southern California. Further south, Universal Schools and Colleges has one location in San Diego and another in San Marcos. The Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital has a phlebotomy training program for students residing along the southern coast.

    Central Valley California

    • Fresno, the second largest city in the central valley flaunts the California Institute of Medical Science and the Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts as two possibilities for earning a phlebotomy certificate. In addition, the Gurnick Academy also has campuses in San Mateo, Concord and Modesto. Abram's College, also in Modesto, offers a cost-efficient phlebotomy and E.K.G. course for those planning on pursing dual certification. Meanwhile, Sacramento's Folsom Lake and MTI colleges are two viable alternatives for students living in the state's capital.

    Northern California

    • In Eureka, California, the College of the Redwoods holds two program locations for the aspiring phlebotomist. The Promedical Assistant Training institution is another Eureka alternative, if the College of the Redwoods is not fitting. Chico's Butte County Regional Occupation Program has been in operation over 35 years and provides many services inclusive of providing phlebotomy training certificates of completion.
