Colleges for Medical Technicians

Medical technicians work in medical settings such as hospitals, doctor's offices and laboratories. Duties medical technicians are responsible for include analyzing blood, preparing specimen samples and performing other routine lab tests. Education to become a medical technician typically consists of earning a one-year certificate or a two-year associate's degree.   1. Elgin Community College

    • Elgin Community College, founded in 1949, offers a clinical laboratory technology program and a clinical laboratory assistant program. Completion of the clinical laboratory technology program at ECC results in an Associate of Science degree, while the completion of the assistant program results in a certificate. ECU is recognized by the Illinois Board of Higher Education, as well as the Illinois Community College Board. As of 2010, ECU had a total of 19,275 students enrolled in credit programs. Elgin Community College is located in Elgin, Illinois.

    College of Southern Maryland

    • College of Southern Maryland, founded in 1958, offers a two-year medical laboratory technology program. Completion of this medical program at CSM results in an Associate of Science degree. As of 2008, enrollment at the college was 22,543 students, along with 436 full-time faculty and staff. CSM is accredited by Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The main campus for College of Southern Maryland is located in La Plata, Maryland. Other CSM campuses in Maryland are located in Leonardtown, Prince Frederick and Waldorf.

    Bluegrass Community and Technical College

    • Bluegrass Community and Technical College, founded in 2005, offers a medical assisting program with a variety of options. Completion of the two-year medical assisting course results in an Associate of Science degree, while other medical assisting technology courses resulting in certificates and diplomas are offered as alternatives. Bluegrass Community and Technical College offers campuses in the state of Kentucky, including the cities of Lexington, Danville and Winchester.

    Saddleback College

    • Saddleback College, founded in 1968, offers a one-year medical assisting program. Completion of the program earns the student a certification in one of the three courses of study, which consist of administrative, clinical and comprehensive. The program includes instruction for common lab tasks that medical technicians carry out, such as skin puncture and injections. The college is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Community Colleges and Junior Colleges, with an annual enrollment of 41,295 students as of 2010. Saddleback College is located in Mission Viejo, California.
