Nepal is a small country nestled in the Himalaya Mountains between India and China. One of the highest altitude countries on Earth, Nepal is known for its scenic beauty and has long been a tourist destination. The population in 2009 was estimated at 28.5 million people, speaking Nepali, Hindi and English. Most of the medical schools in the nation opened in the last 20 years.

    • B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences has been classified as an Autonomous Health Sciences University since 1998, roughly five years after its founding. The Institute is located in Dharan, in eastern Nepal, but also operates a network of district and zone hospitals and primary health centers in the region. It operates under an agreement between the Indian and Nepalese health ministries. B.P Koirali offers undergraduate and graduate level programs and encourages applications from "disadvantaged groups." The institute relies on a community-based training approach, sending out students to remote health centers and hospitals where they work under faculty supervision.

    Kathmandu University

    • Kathmandu University is the umbrella institution for five medical schools that offer a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree: Manipal College of Medical Science in Pokhara, College of Medical Science in Bharatpur, Nepalgunj Medical College, Kathmandu Medical College and the Nepal Medical College, about seven miles from the city of Kathmandu.

Ltd., which established the school in 1993 to provide medical education and train paramedics in Nepal. The school was started by Bostonian MBA Nagender K. Pampati, who became the new institution's Managing Director and Architect.

    Kathmandu Medical College

    • Kathmandu Medical College continues to operate to help resolve the problems of the high cost of medical training outside Nepal and the need for affordable medical care for the people of Kathmandu and the surrounding area. Since 2000, Kathmandu Medical College and the associated KMC Teaching Hospital have been operated by Kathmandu Medical College Pvt. Ltd., a coalition of doctors, business people and charitable organizations.

    Nepal Medical College

    • Nepal Medical College is in a bucolic environment about a half-mile from the Gokarna Safari Park on the other side of the Bagmati River. The campus is home to the medical school and the Nepal Medical College Teaching Hospital. The college's stated purpose is "to sow the seed of self-reliance by the Nepalese professionals."
