AP Medical Colleges

AP stands for Andhra Pradesh, a state in India located on the coast of the Bay of Bengal. Medical colleges in this region are approved by the federal government of India. Please note that degrees conferred from these colleges may not be accepted in the United States or Canada, and that additional licensing examinations may be required to practice in these countries.
  1. Andhra Medical College

    • This school offers students the ability to complete their MBBS degree. It first opened its doors to 50 students in 1902, at which time it was called the Victoria Diamond Jubilee Medical School. AMC is affiliated with eight teaching hospitals, including the King George and Government Victoria hospitals. Each year the school accepts 150 students into its MBBS program.

    Gandhi Medical College

    • Ghandi Medical College offers MBBS, MS and MD degrees and several super-specialty programs. It was founded in 1954 to accommodate the number of aspiring physicians other schools in the area were forced to turn away. Each year 150 students are admitted to the MBBS program, and they study at the college's infirmary-turned-hospital, developed with donations from philanthropic people and organizations.

    Deccan College of Medical Sciences

    • This medical college is for Muslims, a minority in the region. Offering the MBBS degree among others, it accepts 150 students each year, and although Muslim students are given preference, a student of any religious distinction is welcome to apply. An educational trust, although an independent organization, is affiliated with the university.

    Guntur Institute of Medical Sciences

    • Located in the city of Guntur, the GIM offers MBBS and postgraduate degrees. It includes several departments and is affiliated with a government hospital housing 1500 beds. The school is relatively new, formally established in 1946. Although currently a section of NTR University, it is working on becoming autonomous.

    Kakatiya Medical College

    • KMC is located in Warangal, a large city in AP. It was founded in 1959 with the help of benefactor donations and has since expanded to offer many undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including the MBBS. The college's amenities include sports fields and equipment as well as hostels for men and women.

    Katuri Medical College

    • Katuri Medical College is also located in the city of Guntur, and offers undergraduate and postgraduate training. KMC is noted for its amenable study environment, as well as for the high percentage of students that are able to receive diplomas and graduate successfully. One of the newest medical colleges in the state, it was established in 1997.

    Kurnool Medical College

    • Kurnool Medical College was formed with the inception of the state of Andhra Pradesh, as officials recognized the imminent need for physicians in the area. It is the second largest medical college in the state and features recently built lecture theaters and stadiums. The college services the Government General Hospital.

    MediCiti Institute of Medical Sciences

    • The MediCiti institute, established in 1992, is located in a rural part of AP. It was established by Indians living in the United States who wanted to improve access to health care in rural India. When the Hyderabad bombings occurred in 2007, it was the central hospital to receive wounded persons. Along with the MBBS degree, several subspecialty programs are available.

    Osmania Medical College

    • Founded in 1846, OMC is one of the oldest medical colleges in the world. It was here that chloroform was first used as an anaesthetic, and the school has a rich history and reputation for innovation. The campus is located in the city of Koti and includes multiple residences and sports facilities. The college hosts the annual "Intermedics," a competition among sports teams of medical colleges in the state.
