Indian Medical Colleges

A press release issued by the Press Information Bureau of India in 2008 reported that there were 271 medical colleges in the country at the time. Indian medical colleges offer students studies for a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree (MBBS) as well as post-graduate programs. Candidates applying to these colleges must have successfully completed their 12th grade in the sciences major. The selection criterion also entails candidates to appear in an entrance examination, and the final decision is made on the basis of applicant's performance in the exam.
  1. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)

    • AIIMS is a well-regarded medical college based in New Delhi. The institution was established in 1956. It offers teaching, medical research and on-campus patient treatment facilities. AIIMS has undergraduate and postgraduate programs in every sub-field of medical science. According to Indiaedu website, facilities at the institution include a library, computer lab, electron microscope, Organ Retrieval Banking Organization, accommodations, National Poisons Information Center and Medical Social and Welfare Services.

    Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC)

    • Established in 1962, AFMC is a government medical institute, supervised by the Director General Armed Forces Medical Services. The institution is located in Pune. It is recognized by the Medical Council of India. It offers a 4.5 years MBBS program. Other degree programs include a bachelor of science (Nursing), master of dentistry, and a doctorate in every discipline that the medical field has to offer.

    Christian Medical College (CMC)

    • CMC, Vellore is one of the oldest medical institutions in India. Christian Medical College Vellore Association, a composite of Christian organizations and churches, manages the college. The institution offers courses in medicine, physiotherapy, medical laboratory technology, occupational therapy and nursing. Apart from regular medical studies, the institution strives to inculcate an urge in students to serve the sick and ailing community. It features a hospital campus, accommodations facility for distant students, a library and a faculty-student center.

    Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER)

    • JIPMER is located in Pondicherry. It is the oldest medical institution in the country, having been instituted by the French government in 1823. Apart from medicinal studies (MBBS), the institute offers diplomas in medical review officer, medical radiological technician and French as well as specialty courses in urology and cardio thoracic surgery.

    Grant Medical College

    • Grant Medical College is located in Mumbai. It renders educational services to almost 200 students. The institution was established in 1845 and is named after Sir Robert Grant, the Governor of Bombay of the time. It offers a 5.5 years MBBS program that includes one-year residency training. Some courses offered by the institution include anatomy, dentistry, psychiatry, ear/nose/throat, pathology, urology, neurology and radio diagnosis.

    Kasturba Medical College (KMC)

    • KMC started off as a clinic in 1953. It was recognized as a medical college in 1969. The college is affiliated to overseas medical institutions, namely the Malaysian Medical Council and the General Medical Council of Great Britain. It offers a 5.5 years MBBS program. Other courses include a master's in community medicine, leprosy, gynecology, radio diagnosis and psychiatry, as well as postgraduate diplomas in child health, ophthalmology, dermatology and obstetrics.
