Located in southeastern Punjab, the Govt. Medical College in Patiala is one of the state's oldest institutions of medicine, founded six years after the 1947 partitioning of Punjab. The school offers undergraduate and post-graduate degrees in medicine and surgery as well as nursing and lab technician diplomas. The class size for the main Bachelor of Medicine/Surgery program is 150. The attached Rajindra Hospital, which contains six theater-style lecture halls, a center of tuberculosis and chest diseases and a hi-tech trauma center, supports the college's clinical studies.

Christian Medical College is one of several medical schools affiliated with Baba Farid University of Health Sciences. The college cultivates Christian ideals in its education of physicians and nurses and expects students to fulfill a post-graduation public service requirement. Because classes are small, only Indian citizens or non-resident Indians are allowed to attend. Degree offerings include the MBBS, Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Bachelor of Dental Science (BDS) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

The Govt. Medical College in Amritsar, originally founded in 1864, is an institution of the Guru Nanak Dev University. Its location in the historically, culturally and commercially significant city of Amritsar puts the college at the center of activity in Punjab. Govt. Medical College is attached to several hospitals, including the Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital and the Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences. Students can pursue the MBBS or the advanced Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Surgery (MS) degrees. Other degree programs are available for nursing, radiography, lab technology and the Bachelor or Master's in Anatomy, Physiology and Chemistry.

As of 2010, the Sri Guru Ram Das Institute in Amritsar was continuing the expansion of its new campus. The Institute works with the old Sri Guru Ram Das Charitable Hospital and new, larger facilities being built at the current location, including a cancer treatment center. A class of 50 is currently accepted for the MBBS program, but class size is expected to increase to 100 after construction commences. In addition to the medical program, courses are offered for dental sciences, nursing and lab technician.

Dayanand originated in the mid-1930s as a public hospital and teaching facility. The hospital has expanded to include several specialized intensive care units and an incorporated heart institute. Along with the College of Nursing, Dayanand offers programs in nursing, midwifery and MBBS as well as post-graduate degrees and diplomas in a range of specialties such as pediatrics, pathology, surgery, gynecology and psychiatry. The school admits 70 MBBS students each year.
