Catholic Medical Colleges in India

The Catholic Church has a few institutions in India that schools medical students in preparation to become specialists in their field. Out of the nearly 202 medical colleges in India, there are four Catholic medical schools.
  1. St. John's Medical College

    • St John's Medical College started serving medical students in India in 1963. Annexed to St. John's Medical College is St. John's Hospital, St. John's College of Nursing, and St. John's Research Institute. Under the aegis of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India, St. John's Medical College is affiliated to Rajiv Ghandi University of Health Sciences.

      Since its inception, St. John's Medical College has risen to be among the top 10 medical schools of India. It has been awarded a 5-star grading by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. Graduate, postgraduate, and diploma programs are offered and upon graduation students are contracted to serve in communities in India which are in desperate need of medical care. At St. John's, medical students can major in programs such as anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, forensic medicine, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, anaesthesiology, dentistry and gynecology.

    Amala Medical College

    • Amala Medical College is a health institution which is funded and supported by the Catholic Church. Amala which is affiliated to Calicut University is a key in opening the doors of opportunity for several students. Amala Medical College also boasts a network of nearby health institutions: Amala Institute of Medical Science, three hospitals (Amala Cancer Hospital, Homeopathic Hospital, and Ayurvedic Hospital), College of Nursing, School of Nursing, and Amala Cancer Research Center. In homage to the Virgin Mary, the Amala initiated medical service in 1978. Amala offers a high standard to care with modern medical equipment and infrastructure while training physicians and nursing staff to efficient tend to the needs of the sick. Recently Amala has formed a league with Ohio State University to commence exchange programs to benefit both institutions.

    Pushpagiri Medical College

    • The Pushpagiri Medical School is part of a conglomerate, Pushpagiri Medical Society. The Pushpagiri Medical Society comprises a School of Nursing, Medical College Hospital, College of Dental Sciences, College of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy, College of Nursing, and School of Multi-purpose Health Workers, Cardiac Institute, and the School of Medical Lab Technology. Pushpagiri Medical Society was instituted under the Catholic Diocese of Tiruvalla in 1955. Pushpagiri is an official non-profit charitable organization which sponsors the health care costs for insolvent patients.

    Jubilee Medical College

    • The Jubilee Mission Medical College is attached to the Jubilee Mission and Research Institute, Jubilee School of Nursing, Jubilee Mission Medical Hospital, and College of Allied Health Sciences. Jubilee Mission Medical College began ministry in 1951 where thousands of medical students in Kerala have profited. Jubilee is also a charitable organization which treats the poor in India. Some programs in which medical students can enter are cardiology, urology, neurology, neurosurgery, gastroenterology and endocrinology.
