Medical Colleges of Pakistan

Most of Pakistan's medical colleges are in its three major cities--Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi--although you can find smaller, regional colleges in Balochistan, Sindh and Northwest Frontier Province. Typically, a five-year professional program is required to qualify as a doctor in Pakistan.

    King Edward Medical University

    • Founded in 1860 as Lahore Medical School, King Edward Medical University is the oldest medical college in Pakistan and the second oldest on the entire Indian subcontinent. This historic college campus is in the heart of Anarkali Bazaar in Old Lahore. Classes are co-educational and all students pursue a five-year M.B.B.S. degree. Each year the college admits fewer than 200 students to its prestigious program. Preference is given to Pakistani students or foreign nationals of Indo-Pak origin, although five seats are reserved for Afghan and Palestinian refugees. Four seats are open for international students, although international students are expected to contribute $10,000 per year--in addition to tuition--to the college endowment fund. To gain admittance as an international student, you must be able to prove that you have access to $50,000.

    Rawalpindi Medical College

    • Rawalpindi Medical College first opened in 1974. Although it doesn't share King Edward Medical College's long history in Pakistan, it is also run by the University of the Punjab. Prospective students are generally expected to complete their F.Sc degree before applying, and all applicants must sit for a competitive entrance exam and be less than 25 years of age. The college operates in conjunction with three area hospitals: Holy Family Hospital, Benazir Bhutto Hospital and District Headquarters Hospital. Attached to Holy Family Hospital there is a modern teaching complex for students built in 2008. The same quotas for refugees students and foreign students apply as at King Edward in Lahore.
