Maryland is the home of a number of high-quality medical schools. Top-rated medical schools are known for their cutting-edge research, research funding and wide array of research topics. U.S. News & World Report ranked the top medical schools in the nation for 2009 based on such criteria as faculty surveys, research activity and student MCAT scores. Some of the top medical schools in the country were found in the state of Maryland.

    • Second only to Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University (JHU) tops the list of medical schools in the United States, making it Maryland's top-rated medical program. Founded in 1893, JHU has long been recognized as one of the world's best medical colleges. The university is especially known for its specialization in the areas of ear, nose and throat medicine. It is further recognized as one of the leaders in the areas of urology and rheumatology. JHU is known for its cutting-edge research and boasts an annual research budget of $437 million. Departments within the medical school include anesthesiology and critical care, biological chemistry, biomedical engineering, biophysics and biophysical chemistry, cell biology, dermatology, pathology and pediatrics, among others.

    University of Maryland

    • The University of Maryland is the state's second highest rated school of medicine, according to U.S. News & World Report. On a nationwide basis, the university was ranked 43rd. Founded in 1807, it is the fifth oldest medical school in the country and the first American public medical school. Comparable to Johns Hopkins, research expenditures by the University of Maryland's medical program for 2009 was $425 million. The university offers programs in comparative medicine, genetics and genomic medicine, minority health and health disparities, neuroscience, oncology and trauma. The university also offers a number of joint degrees in conjunction with the M.D. These include the Master of Public Health, a Master of Science in Preventative Medicine and the PhD. The University of Maryland is also the home of two prominent research institutes: the Institute for Genome Sciences and the Institute of Human Virology.

    Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

    • The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences is a military-based medical school founded with the purpose of training military personnel for a career in medicine. Located in Bethesda, the medical school works with the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and U.S. Public Health Service. The university is known for its rigorous curriculum that generally requires that students participate in an additional 700 hours of work than is required by other medical schools. The M.D. degree is offered in conjunction with other degree programs, such as biomedical research and public health. Although medical school candidates do not need to be commissioned soldiers, those accepted into the medical school enter with the understanding that they must choose a branch of the military once they have made their commitment to the school's medical program. The university is well-known for its research in the areas of cancer, trauma medicine, health maintenance and infectious diseases.
