Top Medical Schools in America

Choosing a career in medicine is never a decision to be made lightly. You will need to commit yourself to years of rigorous education and licensing exams. After earning your bachelor’s degree, explore post-graduate medical schools. Some of the top medical schools in the United States are Johns Hopkins, Harvard and the University of Washington. After successfully earning your medical degree (M.D.) you may also choose to enroll in a master’s or doctoral degree program; however, this is not required. You’ll also spend three to seven years at a residency program to gain clinical experience.
  1. Johns Hopkins University

    • According to U.S. News & World Report, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is ranked number two in the nation for research. The school is located in Baltimore, Maryland. After earning your undergraduate degree, you can pursue a medical degree, master’s or doctorate degree at Johns Hopkins. You can also elect to enroll in an M.D./Ph.D. combined program. The Johns Hopkins curriculum is structured to provide not only a basic understanding of anatomy and medicine, but also to offer students a chance to engage in hands-on work in a lab, as well as with patients. You must pass the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) exam to apply to this school. You should also have a solid background in science during your undergraduate years, including courses in chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physics and behavioral sciences. Johns Hopkins is a private university.

Harvard Medical School requires students to have demonstrated exceptional aptitude for science. However, the admissions office also prefers to see students who have a solid background in the humanities. Students should have covered the basics during their undergraduate years, including one year of biology, two years of chemistry and one year of physics, calculus and expository writing. Additionally, the Harvard admissions office prefers to accept students who have demonstrated an in-depth knowledge of a particular area by successfully completing an independent study course. Harvard Medical School students have the opportunity to work closely on research projects with established practitioners and researchers.

    University of Washington

    • The University of Washington may be an ideal alternative for thrifty students, as it is not a private university. In addition to earning a bachelor’s degree in areas such as rehabilitation medicine, clinical health medicine and medical technology, students can pursue a medical degree, master’s degree or a doctorate degree. UW Medical School graduates can choose from a variety of residency and fellowship programs. They may choose to specialize in pediatrics, allergy and immunology, dermatology, family medicine, anesthesiology, neurology and other specialties. In addition to solid scores on the MCAT exam, aspiring students are encouraged to have good communication skills and an understanding of medical ethics. UW Medical School encourages its students to “job-shadow” a practicing physician to gain practical knowledge.
