List of Medical Schools in the USA

Medical schools in the United States are among the best in the world. According to U.S. News and World Report, there are certain universities that typically top the list of the top-rated schools on a yearly basis. These schools are awarded their status on the basis of their cutting-edge research, research funding and academic standards. Four schools are notable as the top-ranking schools. Three of these are rated highly because of their research and the final one because of its reputation in primary care.
  1. Harvard University

    • Harvard University's medical school is regarded as the the top medical school in the nation. Harvard tops the list of multiple online ranking lists. U.S. News and World Report rates schools according to survey results taken among prominent faculty members of medical schools nationwide. Harvard also topped the list of the world's best universities, according to the Times Higher Education Supplement, which uses similar methodologies to determine its rankings. Founded in 1782, Harvard Medical School has emerged as the leading innovator of medical research in the world. The school has seven basic science departments, two in social science, and one clinical science department. Harvard Medical School boasted a budget of $544,158,873 for 2008 (figures for 2009 are not yet available).

    Johns Hopkins University

    • Second only to Harvard on most lists is Johns Hopkins University, which has long been regarded one of the world's best medical schools. JHU is considered the top-rated university for its specialization in ear, nose and throat medicine along with rheumatology and urology. JHU receives more than $437 million annually for research support and boasts 19 Nobel laureates in its long and storied history, which dates back to 1893.

    University of Pennsylvania

    • Considered one of the premier medical research institutions in the world, the University of Pennsylvania ranked third on the U.S. News and World Report list of top medical schools. The university's medical school currently has 28 research departments and 18 centers and institutes that specialize in particular areas of medicine, including the Mahoney Institute of Neurological Sciences. The University of Pennsylvania is well known for its interdisciplinary approach to the study of medicine. The school offers its medical students the opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. in conjunction with the M.D. degree as part of its interdisciplinary emphasis.

    University of Washington

    • The University of Washington's medical school has been rated as the top medical school for primary care studies. This differs from the other three schools, whose primary claim to fame is their reputation as research institutions. The university offers students the opportunity to pursue joint M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. The university is unique in the institution of its college system, which is designed to integrate clinical skills and professionalism into the academic curriculum. Students work closely with a faculty mentor during their journey through medical school.
