The history of Catholic higher education in the United States dates back more than 200 years. Today, there are 230 Catholic colleges and universities across the country. Because of their religious legacy, Catholic universities have a national reputation for community service and humanitarian activities.   1. Georgetown University

    • Georgetown University, founded in 1789 and currently the oldest Catholic university in the country, offers more than 150 courses of study to approximately 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The university is located in a Washington, D.C., neighborhood bearing the same name. In addition to the liberal arts, the university features a top-ranked law school, medical school, business school and the well-respected Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. Famous Georgetown University faculty include former U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel and former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Although Georgetown University is known for rigorous academics, students and faculty relax by supporting their NCAA-ranked men's basketball team, the Hoyas.

    • Loyola University, located in Chicago, offers academic programs at 10 schools dispersed throughout three campuses in the Chicago area. The university enrollment stands at approximately 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students. In addition to liberal arts and sciences degrees, the university offers professional practice degrees in law, medicine, business and education. Although Loyola University Chicago places emphasis on principles of the Catholic faith in all aspects of university life, the university is open to students of all faiths and offers classes in world religions.     University of Notre Dame

    • University of Notre Dame, located in South Bend and known simply as Notre Dame, was founded in 1842. Today, the university enrolls 11,000 students pursing undergraduate and graduate degrees in liberal arts and sciences, engineering, business, law and architecture. The university's religious character can be seen in community service. According to the school's website, more than 80 percent of the student body participate in community service activities. Additionally, an estimated 10 percent pursue volunteerism after graduation. The university's most notable contribution to college sports is their NCAA Division I ranked football team, known to fans across the United States as "The Fighting Irish."

    Villanova University

    • Villanova University, founded in 1842 and located in suburban Philadelphia, enrolls approximately 10,000 students majoring in the liberal arts and sciences, nursing, business, engineering and law. Notable campus architecture includes the Saint Thomas of Villanova Chapel in the center of the campus. Villanova maintains a vibrant student community by offering more than 250 student clubs and intramural sports.
