List of the Largest U.S. Universities

The United States is known for doing everything in a big way, and its universities are no different. Schools that have 40,000 to 50,000 students enrolled at one time are not uncommon. Some students stay away from big schools to avoid feeling like a number, but going to a large school has a lot of benefits as well. Standing out at one of these universities is an accomplishment, and attending one of these large schools is a great way to learn how to network.
  1. Arizona State University

    • Arizona State University, which has a system of campuses in Tempe, downtown Phoenix and outside Glendale, is one of the largest universities in the United States. There are over 51,000 students currently enrolled in classes at Arizona State University as of January 2011. This university contains several colleges and offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees. There are currently over 1,000 faculty members employed by Arizona State University, a majority of which hold a doctoral degree. Some of the more popular undergraduate degrees offered by this university include accounting, African-American studies, art education, chemistry, English, geography, liberal studies, political science, pre-law, pre-medicine, nutrition and many others.

    Ohio State University

    • The main campus of Ohio State University is located in Columbus, Ohio. OSU has more than 64,000 students currently enrolled in classes as of January 2011. There are 49,769 undergraduates studying 170 undergraduate majors. The campus of Ohio State is spread out over 1,700 acres and features 457 buildings. Seventy-seven percent of the classes at Ohio State have fewer than 40 students, and the graduation rate is 78 percent. Eighty-one percent of students attending Ohio State are from Ohio. Some of the most popular majors at this university include accounting, anthropology, criminal justice, civil engineering, Chinese, Spanish, English and pre-law.

    University of Central Florida

    • The University of Central Florida, located 13 miles outside of Orlando, has 56,235 students currently enrolled as of 2011. The campus features 164 buildings and is spread out over 1,415 acres. The university currently offers over 216 undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional degrees. Seventy-two percent of the faculty hold a doctoral degree. As of 2010, the average GPA of the incoming freshman is a 3.82. The most popular undergraduate majors at this university are psychology, elementary education, finance, hospitality management, nursing, marketing, interdisciplinary studies, management, accounting, political science, criminal justice, molecular biology, health services administration and organizational communications.

    University of Minnesota

    • The University of Minnesota is a system of schools spread out throughout the state, with its main campus located in Minneapolis and St. Paul. There are currently a total of 67,364 students enrolled throughout the system, with 51,659 at the main Twin Cities campus. There are 4,105 faculty members and over 400,000 alumni spread out throughout the country. Forty-two percent of the current students at the University of Minnesota receive some sort of financial aid. Some of the more popular majors at the University of Minnesota include American Indian studies, architecture, chemical engineering, economics, elementary education, graphic design, music education, statistics and urban studies.
