The University of Notre Dame, commonly referred to as Notre Dame, is a private Catholic research university that was founded in 1842. The university contains seven constituent colleges and schools, including the graduate school, school of architecture, law school and colleges of science, arts and letters, business and engineering. As of 2009, the university had about 8,400 undergraduates and 3,300 graduate students. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish compete in the Big East Conference and NCAA Division I athletics. In 2010, "U.S. News & World Report" magazine ranked the University of Notre Dame 20th among the nation's universities.

Georgetown University, founded in 1789 and with beginnings reaching to the 17th century, is the nation's oldest Catholic university. The school continues to maintain a strong Catholic and Jesuit identity, and requires all of its students to take two classes in philosophy and theology. As of 2009, the school had about 15,300 undergraduates and 7,000 graduate students within seven schools, including Georgetown College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the schools of law, medicine, nursing and health studies, business and foreign service.
