Top Medical Schools in Britain

It is difficult to rank the top among the top, and the vast majority of the medical schools in Great Britain are among the best institutions in the world. There are more than 30 medical schools in the UK, with courses that take students through five to six years of study. Among the top ranked (The Guardian, 2009 Guide) are the Universities of Dundee, Cambridge, Oxford, Edinburgh and the University College London.
  1. University of Dundee

    • The topped ranked university in Great Britain is not in England, but rather in northern Scotland. The school is unique in that its medical college is comprised of three small schools: School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, and School of Nursing and Midwifery. Located in Dundee, the second largest city after Edinburgh, the University is set in a moderate urban setting. Students applying to the Dundee Medical College must follow the same application procedures as those applying for undergraduate studies at the university.

    University of Cambridge

    • Cambridge has held the reputation as being one of the top universities in the world for over 800 years (1209-2009). There are over 30 distinct colleges in the University, the school of Medicine being just a small part of the wide range of studies offered. The Cambridge Medical school is one of the most highly contested in the world as many of the worlds top most recognizable medical professionals emerge from the school.

    Oxford

    • The University of Oxford's Division of Medical Sciences lacks nothing in competition to Dundee or its top rival school, Cambridge. Over 900 years old, Oxford is the most established English speaking university in the world. Myriad Nobel prize winners have emerged from Oxfords halls, medical scientists among them. In the Medical Sciences, there are 21 departments along with a noteworthy cancer research department.

    University of Edinburgh

    • Located in Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, the University, like the others is comprised of multiple colleges including humanities, social sciences, engineering, and medicine. The college of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine is one of the largest in the United Kingdom, the college contains four distinct schools: the School of Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Sciences and Community Health, Molecular and Clinical Medicine, and the Royal School of Veterinary Studies. University College London, UCL

    • University College London, known as UCL, was established as an alternative to the prestige selectivity of Cambridge and Oxford, and is regarded as the third oldest university in the UK. However, it lacks little of what Cambridge and Oxford have to offer in all colleges as well as the School of Medicine. The school takes about 330 undergraduate medical students each year divided into a wide range of divisions. The school has also produced Nobel scholars and award winning scientists in the medical sciences.
