Harvard medical students can study both medicine and dentistry. The first two years are focused on learning from the book about human physiology and disease. The final two years are spent practicing medicine with one to three-month clerkships at various hospitals. The average standards for admission to the school are at 3.8 GPA and MCAT scores of 11.01 on verbal, 12.09 on physical science, and 12.03 on biological science. Tuition for the 2009-10 academic year, not including room and board and other expenses was $42,500.

The University of Pennsylvania medical school is one of the United States' oldest and best. It was ranked as the second best medical school in the country by US News and World Report in 2010. "At Penn academic excellence, as well as compassion for the patients we are privileged to serve, are stressed," according to the University of Penn website. The school offers six modules to complete before graduation. The first modules focus on book learning, and the final modules require the student to do more hands-on work. There school features a medical simulation center where students can practice their craft. The median GPA of the class entering in 2009 was a 3.84 with MCAT scores of 11 on verbal, 12 on physical science, and 12 on biological science. The yearly tuition, not including room and board, is $42,472.

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is ranked in the top three medical schools in the country according to the 2010 US News and World Report.
