Pakistani Medical Colleges

The doctor/population ratio in Pakistan is 1:1,500 but the World Health Organization's recommended ratio for developing countries is one for every 1,000 people. At this ratio, Pakistan would need 175,000 doctors--60,000 more than those already practicing in the country. This is a reason many medical schools exist in Pakistan. The International Institute of Medical Education lists 33 medical schools in Pakistan. Ten are in the capital city of Karachi, four each in the cities of Lahore and Abbottabad, three each in Rawalpindi and Sindh, and the rest are in other parts of Pakistan. Three of the 33 schools are exclusively for women.
  1. Frontier Medical College

    • This college offers a five-year course leading to a bachelor's degree in medicine and surgery--the equivalent of an M.D. degree in the United States. The MBBS degrees are recognized by the Ministry of Health of Pakistan, the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council, and the U.S. Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. Established in 1995, Frontier and its teaching hospitals are self-financing institutions with highly qualified faculty and well-equipped laboratories. The Shahina Jamil Hospital and the Government Hospital Mansehera are where Frontier students are trained. A four-story, 110,000-square-foot college building accommodates all departments, lecture halls, laboratories, library, museum, auditorium, seminar and staff rooms, and offices. It has separate hostels for boys and girls, and facilities for various sports. Nine batches of students have already passed professional MBBS examinations and are working in the country and abroad. The MBBS course of study is open to male and female candidates from Pakistan and abroad.
