The University of Otago, Christchurch, School of Medicine & Health Sciences, also known as the Christchurch School of Medicine, is billed primarily as a research-oriented medical school. The Christchurch School of Medicine also works closely with the local Christchurch Hospital. The school has internationally-known programs in cancer and heart disease research. The roots of the University of Otago, Christchurch, reach back into the 1850s, and the university was formally established in 1972 as part of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Otago.
