Medical Transcription Schools in New York

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for medical transcriptionists will increase by 11 percent from 2008 to 2018, resulting in the creation of 11,700 new jobs. In New York, a number of schools offer certificate and degree programs in medical transcription. With locations throughout the state, these schools teach students the medical terminology and technological skills needed for success in the growing field of transcription.

    • Established in 1896, the Utica School of Commerce operates branches in Utica, Canastota and Oneonta. The school offers an associate degree in administrative sciences with a concentration in medical transcription. Students in the program complete courses in keyboarding, English, anatomy, psychology, medical law and ethics, pharmacology, medical office administration, medical insurance and spreadsheets. The two-year program includes a seminar in career options to help students make plans for after graduation. The college offers day, evening and online courses to accommodate students' schedules. Utica School of Commerce participates in federal and state financial aid programs and grants its own merit and needs-based scholarships to students.

    Andrews & Holbrook Training

    • Andrews & Holbrook Training is approximately 10 miles southwest of Schenectady, New York in the town of Latham. The school offers its diploma program in a classroom-based format, through live online lectures and self-paced online programs. Culminating in a certificate of completion, the training program covers topics in medical terminology, anatomy, voice recognition editing and privacy regulations. Students also receive 20 hours of hands-on practice in transcription. To enter the program, students must pass a typing test that demonstrates the ability to type 40 words per minute or more. Students also take a Windows operating system and Microsoft Word knowledge test prior to admission into the program. Although the school does not participate in state or federal financial aid programs, assistance is available from some New York counties to help offset the cost of tuition at the school.

    Ridley-Lowell Business and Technical Institute

    • Founded in 1850 as the Lowell School of Business, Ridley-Lowell Business and Technical Institute offers medical transcription programs in Binghamton and Poughkeepsie, New York. Graduates from the program receive a certificate in transcription and can finish all of the degree requirements in nine to 12 months of full-time study. The school offers both day and evening classes. Ridley-Lowell participates in both federal and state financial aid programs as well as grant plans for veterans. The school offers a career placement office for graduates. Students may continue to use the services offered by the placement office throughout the course of their professional career if they become unemployed or need to change jobs.
