CTU’s Online division offers an associate of science (AS) in medical billing and coding. As you study, you will learn about the software and systems used to complete the job. You will also gain an understanding of how to code and classify patient diagnoses and procedures, as well as the process of coding and recording medical records, insurance claims, and medical billing. CTU offers an entirely online “campus” for this degree program and you can also keep up with your class and instructors using your mobile phone.
You can obtain an associate's degree in medical billing and coding through Everest University Online. The curriculum covers the processes involved in insurance and claim forms, as well as how to apply medical codes to the appropriate documents. You will gain knowledge about medical insurance, insurance claim processing, and coding for both medical procedures and medical diagnoses. In addition, the program introduces you to medical terminology and patient records. According to Everest’s website, university support staff are available 24 hours a day and courses do not require you to log in at specific times.
Kaplan Continuing Education offers certificate programs in either medical coding or billing. You can complete either program in 12 months or less online. Both programs require that you have a high school diploma or GED. To begin your program, you will have to pass a basic computer skills exam or provide documentation that you have completed a college level computer course. If you cannot pass the exam, you can take a computer course with KCE before you start. The coding program covers medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, coding, classification, and health care technology. The billing program covers Medicaid and Medicare along with managed and commercial health care. You will also gain an understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Both courses will teach you how to manage and market your own coding or billing business as well.
