Medical billing and coding professionals are responsible for assigning codes to illnesses, medical procedures, and injuries so that patients or their insurance providers can be billed for the services and care which has been provided. These medical professionals work in clinics, hospitals or billing offices. Certification in medical billing, medical coding or both is required for a career in these fields. According to Salary.com, as of 2010 a medical billing clerk makes an average between $28,471 and $34,564 while a medical coding tech makes an average between $38,058 and $49,906.

KCE offers both a medical coding and medical billing certificate program. The medical coding program at KCE teaches students analysis, retrieval, claims processing and compliance maintenance for a successful entry-level position in medical coding. The medical billing program at KCE teaches student reimbursement and claims processing procedures also with the purpose of helping students get a job in the field.     • Virginia College (VC) was founded in 1983 and had its first campus open in 1992. There are various locations throughout the United States, each offering certification and vocational training opportunities. VC locations such as Mobile, Alabama, Biloxi, Mississippi and Columbia, South Carolina as well as a few others offer a medical billing a coding program which focuses on office protocol.
