Civil Engineering Colleges & Universities in Maryland

Maryland is home to several highly ranked engineering schools that offer programs in civil engineering, the study of design, construction, urban planning and environmental engineering. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report ranked two universities in Maryland among the nation's top 25 engineering graduate schools, and one school among the nation's top five undergraduate engineering programs where doctorate degrees are not offered.
  1. University of Maryland at College Park

    • The department of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Maryland's A. James Clark School of Engineering was established in 1908. The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs. Undergraduates can work toward the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in civil engineering, and graduate students work toward the Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. Civil and environmental engineering students can specialize in environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation, water resources or construction engineering. All undergraduates must pass a comprehensive exam at the end of their last year. All graduate students must complete scholarly papers or theses, and PhD students must complete extensive independent research. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Maryland at College Park 17th among engineering graduate schools.

    Johns Hopkins University

    • The civil engineering department at Johns Hopkins University's Whiting School of Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Undergraduates can work toward the Bachelor of Science degree or a combined Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree. Graduate students can work toward the Master of Science in Engineering (MSE), Master of Civil Engineering (MCE) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The department spans ten primary research areas, including fluid mechanics, structural dynamics, computational mechanics, probabilistic methods and coastal and ocean engineering. Johns Hopkins University tied for 25th in U.S. News & World Report's 2009 ranking of engineering graduate schools.

    United States Naval Academy

    • The United States Naval Academy was founded in 1845, and, as of 2009, had about 4,400 undergraduates. The civil engineering track within the school's Coastal Engineering program emphasizes research in coastal and environmental engineering as well as ocean structures and marine foundations. Students work toward a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report ranked the United States Naval Academy 5th among undergraduate engineering programs where doctorate degrees are not offered.
