For students interested in engineering, there are many college and university programs throughout the country from which to choose. Engineering is a broad field, and specialties can range from computer and electrical engineering to chemical and mechanical engineering.     Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Engineering

    • The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a private institution located in Cambridge, across the Charles River basin from Boston with close proximity to Harvard University and Boston University. The School of Engineering was considered in 2009 by U.S. News and World Report to be the best engineering program in the country. The school was founded in 1861 and today educates 60% of MIT's undergraduates and 40% of MIT's graduate students, according to the School of Engineering's website.     • Stanford University is a private school located in southern California in the town of Stanford. The School of Engineering at Stanford started in 1925. The school allows undergraduates at the university to apply to the program after university admission and encourages students to pursue diverse interests before applying to the engineering school. Majors range from Bioengineering and Aeronautics to Chemical and Mechanical engineering. According to U.S. News and World Report, the Stanford School of Engineering ranked second in the country in 2009.

    University of California, Berkeley College of Engineering

    • The University of California is a public university with a campus in Berkeley, a town convenient to Oakland and San Francisco. The College of Engineering was founded in 1868 and is now comprises seven departments, including Bioengineering and Nuclear Engineering. Undergraduates can combine the requirements of two engineering majors to form a joint major, as well as a double major. The college offers masters and PhD programs for graduate students. In 2009, U.S. News and World Report ranked Berkeley second in the nation, tied with Stanford University, for engineering.
