Accounting is a vital part to any successful business. To pursue a career in accounting, accountants need at least a bachelor's degree in the subject, though a master's degree will make a candidate more desirable for employers. Most universities offer an accounting degree, and the United States boasts some of the best programs in the country.

    • The University of Texas at Austin is the top ranked school for accounting in the United States. It led the Public Accounting Reports best accounting schools list for eight years. UT also topped the U.S. News and World Report's top accounting schools list for 2010. The university has a student body of 50,000 and offers a bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree in accounting. The bachelor of business administration with emphasis in accounting requires 21 credit hours in the subject.

    University of Illinois

    • The University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana consistently vies with the University of Texas for position as the top-ranked accounting school. The university was established in 1867 as one of the original 31 land-grant colleges and was called Illinois Industrial University; the name was changed to the University of Illinois in 1885. Approximately 34,000 students attended in 2009. The school offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in accounting. Two master's degrees are offered: master of accounting science, which requires an undergraduate degree in accounting for admission, and master of science in accountancy, which does not. The bachelor of science in accountancy degree requires 31 hours of accounting classes.

    Brigham Young University

    • Brigham Young University follows close behind Texas and Illinois as one of the top accounting schools. Located in Provo, Utah, BYU is affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It is named after Brigham Young who was president of the Mormon church when the school was founded in 1875. Accountancy classes are administered by BYU's Marriott School of Business Management. The department offers an "accountancy jr." core which requires students to take 24 hours of accounting classes that are usually taken during junior year. Many graduates go on to work for public or private accounting firms, mainly in taxes or audits.
