Truman State University is located in the northeastern region of the state, in the town of Kirksville, Missouri. Founded in 1867, the school is named after Harry Truman, the 33rd president of the United States and the only president to have been born in the state of Missouri. The university was originally a teachers' college, but has it expanded over the years to offer excellent programs in numerous disciplines (and has undergone six name changes to reflect its evolving statewide mission). Truman State offers 43 undergraduate programs and 9 graduate programs in 5 different schools.

College of the Ozarks is a private Christian college located in Point Lookout, Missouri, nestled in the heart of the Ozark Mountains. Affectionately known as Hard Work U, College of the Ozarks is unique in that full-time students are not required to pay for their education; they are required to work at the college as they study in lieu of paying tuition. Students work 15 hours per week at an on-campus work assignment during regular semesters. They also work 40 hours for at least two weeks during semester breaks. College of the Ozarks offers programs of study in 30 academic departments, as well as 6 pre-professional programs, including pre-med and pre-law.

Drury University is a private school located in Springfield, Missouri. Originally known as Springfield College, it later became Drury College and finally, in 2000, Drury University. Drury is especially noted for its excellent architecture department; many students from around the country choose to attend Drury to study in this field. Drury is also unique in that it offers a four-year general education degree, through the Global Perspectives in the 21st Century (or GP21) academic program. This degree is intended to provide its recipients with an all-around understanding of the world and how it is changing; the ultimate goal of the degree is to form citizens of the world.

Washington University is located in the outer St. Louis area and is a private research institution. It is named for George Washington. The university prides itself on its multicultural atmosphere; its students and faculty hail from all 50 states and from 110 different countries. The university has seven different schools, including a law school and a medical school. It is also home to the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, among other prominent research centers; it receives a great deal of its research funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

Rockhurst University is located in Kansas City, Missouri, and is a private Jesuit institution. Rockhurst prides itself on a dedication to learning and a tradition of service; when students graduate, they receive two transcripts, one detailing their academic performance and the other detailing their service activities. Because of this academic encouragement to service, over 97 percent of students participate in some form of community service during their study at Rockhurst.
