    • Jacksonville State University offers both a bachelor of arts and a bachelor of fine arts with an optional studio concentration in photography. Candidates must complete two years of general education and prerequisite coursework with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and minimum major GPA of 3.0. To be admitted into the photography concentration in the third year of study, students must also submit a portfolio of artistic work for review by the faculty of the department of art. Advanced coursework topics include black and white photography, digital photography and photographic materials and techniques.

    • The University of Alabama offers a bachelor of arts in studio art and a bachelor of fine arts with an optional emphasis in photography that is tailored to meet the individual student’s personal development and interests. General education coursework in the liberal arts and sciences is required, followed by major coursework in art history, foundational studio art techniques and specialized photographic training. Admission into upper-level courses is dependent upon a review of the student’s academic performance in the first two years of the program. Coursework includes black and white photography, film development and enlargement techniques, contemporary art and the history of photography.

      Highly selective master of arts and master of fine arts degree programs with a major in studio art and optional concentration in photography are also available. Candidates must submit a comprehensive portfolio that includes at least 20 works of original photographic pieces, in addition to a resume and three letters of reference. Applicants must also hold an undergraduate degree in art with a GPA of at least a “B.”

    • Athens State University offers a bachelor of arts degree program in art with an optional concentration in photography. Admission into upper-level major coursework is dependent on a portfolio review and academic performance in the first two years of study. Coursework in general studies is required, including English composition, the humanities, natural science, social science, design, drawing and art history.
