Organizational Psychology Degrees

Organizational psychology, also referred to as industrial, work or occupational psychology, refers to the study of individual and collective behavior within work environments and organizations. There are multiple undergraduate and graduate degree programs in organizational and industrial psychology at schools throughout the United States. Graduates of these programs may work in a variety of settings, including government research, human resource management, corporate consulting or counseling.
  1. Baccalaureate Degrees

    • Baccalaureate level degrees are generally four years in duration and require at least one year of general education coursework in the humanities and sciences in addition to specialized major courses. A major or concentration in organizational and industrial psychology typically requires a significant amount of coursework in general psychology, such as introductory psychology, developmental psychology, research methods, statistics, abnormal psychology and social psychology, in addition to topics in industrial and organizational psychology, such as group dynamics, motivation, career development, labor relations and work performance.

      Many schools in the United States offer degree programs at this level. As an example, based in Massachusetts, Fitchburg State College offers a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. The Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College of the City University of New York offers a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in industrial and organizational psychology. The Georgia Institute of Technology offers an undergraduate certificate program in organizational and industrial psychology. California State University at East Bay offers a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a further concentration in industrial and organizational psychology. Eastern Connecticut State University and Saint Xavier University both offer a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a concentration in industrial and organizational psychology. Located in Oregon, Corban University is a Christian-affiliated college that offers both an undergraduate major and minor program in organizational and industrial psychology.

    Master's Degrees

    • There are many master’s degree programs in organizational psychology throughout the United States. An undergraduate degree in psychology, sociology, labor studies, human resources or a related field is generally needed in order to be considered for admission. These programs are typically comprised of advanced foundational breadth coursework in psychology and research methods in addition to specialized courses in the psycho-social aspects of organizational and workplace behavior. Some programs also have the option of completing a capstone project or formal thesis.

      Located in Chicago, Roosevelt University offers a Master of Arts degree program in industrial and organizational psychology. The Appalachian State University offers a two-year interdisciplinary Master of Arts with a major in industrial and organizational psychology and human resource management. Eastern Kentucky University, Angelo State University, University of Hartford, San Jose State University and Purdue University all offer a Master of Science degree in industrial and organizational psychology. Based in Chicago, the Adler School of Professional Psychology offers a Master of Arts degree program in counseling and organizational psychology with courses available on weekends, evenings and through online distance learning.

    Doctorate Degrees

    • Doctorate degrees in organizational and industrial psychology build on the knowledge and skills gained at the baccalaureate and master's degree level in the form of a major written dissertation or thesis that must be defended in an oral examination. Additional specialized coursework, including research methodologies, is also required.

      The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Northcentral University, Wayne State University, Ohio University and Louisiana State University all offer a doctorate degree program in industrial and organizational psychology. Michigan State University offers a joint Ph.D. in industrial and organizational psychology with the participation of the Department of Management, the Eli Broad College of Business and the School of Labor and Industrial Relations. The University of Minnesota offers a doctorate degree in psychology with a specialization option in industrial and organizational psychology. Kansas State University offers a doctorate degree program in organizational and industrial psychology with optional concentrations in human resources, personnel issues and procedures, or organizational behavior and theory.
