Forensic Psychology Graduate Degrees

Forensic psychology, a sub-specialty within the field of psychology, is an interdisciplinary subject area that draws on research from criminology, law and behavioral science. Several schools offer graduate degree programs in forensic psychology at many locations throughout the United States. Graduates are prepared to work in penal institutions, court settings, psychiatric clinics, law enforcement agencies and academia.

    • The Graduate School of Professional Psychology at the University of Denver offers a Master’s in Forensic Psychology degree program. Over two years of full-time comprehensive study, students are trained in three main areas: population assessment, individual and group therapy and professional consultation within legal and criminal justice settings. An oral clinical competency exam and professional field placement performed under peer supervision are also required.

    Chicago School of Professional Psychology

    • The Chicago School of Professional Psychology offers both masters and doctoral degree programs in forensic psychology. The Master of Arts in forensic psychology is available in both Chicago and Washington, D.C. Students are trained in psychological assessment, clinical intervention and treatment planning within a criminal justice setting. A Master of Arts in forensic psychology with an emphasis in applied forensic psychology services is also available through online distance learning. The Doctor of Psychology in clinical forensic psychology program is offered at campus locations in Chicago, Los Angeles and Irvine, Calif. Students gain the knowledge and skills to perform complex empirical and applied research in both professional forensic settings and educational institutions.

    Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology

    • The Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology offers a Doctor of Psychology degree in clinical psychology with a concentration in forensic psychology. Prerequisite coursework in cognitive testing, personality assessment, cross-cultural psychology and the psychopathology of children, adolescents and adults is followed by advanced courses in forensic psychology, law and mental health. A major written project and an internship in a professional setting, such as a prison, mental health clinic of forensic hospital unit, are also required.

    • The University of North Dakota offers a Master of Arts in forensic psychology that is delivered through online distance learning. All coursework is available through online video lectures with the exception of one on-campus visit. This program is comprised of two years of coursework in diversity psychology, statistics, social psychology, psychology and the law, criminal behavior and profiling, behavioral pathology and cognitive psychology.
