The University of Toronto is the largest school of higher learning in Canada with almost 70,000 students enrolled annually. According to the Times Higher Education, the school is one of only five institutions worldwide to be in the top 15 in all ranking areas. With two physical campuses in Vancouver and Kelowna, the University of British Columbia has an annual enrollment of around 50,000 students. Webometrics ranks the school as having the 35th-best research department in the world. The University of British Columbia offers 27 different bachelor's degrees, five master's degrees and two doctoral degrees. Distance education courses are also offered in an online format through the Office of Learning Technology. The University of British Columbia fields 23 men's and women's athletic teams in 15 different sports that compete on the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) level.

Although it has only been in existence since 1957, the University of Waterloo boasts an annual enrollment of around 30,000 students. The school has a Research & Technology Park that provides students with the opportunity to take their ideas and develop them into marketable products. The University of Waterloo also houses the Canadian Water Network and is actively involved in water research. The University of Waterloo offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees in nine different faculties, including arts, health sciences, engineering, the environment, mathematics and science. The school is also affiliated with four other colleges and universities.
