Toronto, Canada's largest city, is the capital of Ontario and is located on the shore of Lake Ontario. In 2008, "Forbes" magazine named Toronto one of the world's most economically powerful cities because "it is the fastest growing G7 financial center". Toronto is also an educational center that boasts several institutions of higher learning.

    • The University of Toronto, Canada's largest institution of higher learning, was founded in 1827 and today there are campuses located in and around the city. Three campuses are "green" or environmentally sustainable while St. George, the downtown campus, is the largest. Toronto's Institute for Aerospace Studies is also associated with the university. In the 2008 to 2009 academic year, at least 55,000 students were enrolled in over 600 undergraduate and 168 graduate programs. A sampling of the university's programs includes dentistry, education, forestry, law, medicine, music, nursing, pharmacy, public health and social work. The university's library, one of the top 5 for research in North America, houses over 18 million holdings.

    Ryerson University

    • Ryerson University, established in 1852, is a 21-acre campus located in downtown Toronto's Garden District in Yonge and Dundas Square. The university offers approximately 100 undergraduate and graduate programs and served over 28,000 students in the 2009 to 2010 academic year. Several of Ryerson's academic programs are unique among Canadian universities including disability studies, early childhood education, image arts and biomedical engineering. Students can also earn degrees and certificates part time or through distance education by enrolling in Ryerson's School of Continuing Education. The university offers over 1,100 courses, workshops and seminars through the continuing education program. Ryerson's research centers and laboratories include the Privacy and Crime Institute, HIV Prevention Lab and the Centre for Studies in Food Security.

    York University

    • York University, located near Black Creek, features an interdisciplinary approach to academics that allows students to create their own majors or combine majors in different fields. York has an established affiliation with the Canadian Space Program and the university's space engineering program is unique in the country. Students of space engineering can pursue a career in the space industry or at a space agency. The university's Glendon liberal arts college features small class sizes and bilingual instruction in English and French. Additionally, York offers programs in law, business, fine arts, environmental studies, nursing, psychology and education. Students can also participate in one of York's research centers like feminist studies, Jewish studies, refugee studies, Canadian studies and language studies.
