Colleges in the Oregon Area

Oregon colleges offer a range of traditional and nontraditional learning opportunities. The Oregon University System includes seven universities and centers across the state and Oregon State University is noted for its research programs. Private colleges meet the needs of students seeking alternative coursework, a more intimate experience or a faith-centered education.
  1. University of Oregon

    • The University of Oregon, founded in 1876, offers 300 comprehensive academic programs at campuses in Eugene and Portland, and at 33 research centers and institutes. Total enrollment in 2011 was about 24,000 and resident tuition was almost $21,000. Tuition for nonresidents was over $38,000. Sports teams compete in Division 1 Athletics in the PAC Ten Conference. The university offers study abroad programs and internships in 95 countries. Eugene, site of the main campus, has a reputation for outdoor adventure, open mindedness and a college town lifestyle.

    Oregon State University

    • Oregon State University, located 90 miles south of Portland in Corvallis, is the only university in Oregon to earn kudos from the Carnegie Foundation for its high research activity. The state's largest research university has 12 colleges, 15 agricultural research stations, multiple extension offices and a marine study institute in Newport. Enrollment in 2010 was about 24,000 students taking courses in 200 undergraduate and 80 graduate programs. Tuition for 25 credit hours for residents was $3,360 and $11,130 for nonresidents taking the same number of hours.

    Alternative Colleges

    • Located in Portland, the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine offers masters and doctoral programs and conducts research in Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, therapeutic massage and qi cultivation. Combining Western and Chinese medicine is one of the college's focuses. Clinics operated by the college provide hands-on experience for students while offering low-cost services to the community. Also located in Portland, the National College of Natural Medicine offers three professional graduate degrees, including Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, Master of Science in Oriental Medicine and Master of Acupuncture. A teaching clinic serves the community.

    Colleges with a Religious Affiliation

    • Marylhurst University is Oregon's oldest Catholic university. Founded by the Sisters of the Holy Names in 1893, the college provides certificate, undergraduate, graduate and online programs. Undergraduate courses offered include liberal arts, business, religious studies and psychology. Nine graduate degrees are offered. Enrollment at the college is under 2,000 students so classes are small and students receive individual attention. The college is located south of Portland. Corban University, located in Salem, offers 50 majors. The independent Christian university, founded as a Baptist bible college in 1935 has an enrollment of about 1,100 students. In addition to religious studies, the college confers degrees in business, the arts, English and education.
