The Chicago area is rich with colleges and universities, including four research universities ranked among the nation's top 120 universities by U.S. News and World Report and two ranked among the nation's top 15 by the same magazine. Students at Chicago area universities can work toward undergraduate and graduate degrees in a wide variety of fields.

    • John D. Rockefeller founded the University of Chicago, a private research university, in 1890. As of 2009, the school had about 5,000 undergraduates and 10,000 graduate students. The university contains 12 academic divisions, including the undergraduate college, the Booth School of Business, the Pritzker School of Medicine, the Divinity School, the Law School and more. The University of Chicago tied for eighth in U.S. News and World Report's 2010 ranking of national universities.

    Northwestern University

    • Northwestern University, a private research university, was founded in 1851. The school is located in Evanston, a suburb of Chicago. As of 2009, about 8,500 undergraduates and 7,900 graduate students attended Northwestern. The university contains 12 colleges and schools, including the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Medill School of Journalism, the Kellogg School of Management and more.     Illinois Institute of Technology

    • The Illinois Institute of Technology is a private research university that was founded in 1940. As of 2009, the school had about 2,500 undergraduates and 4,800 graduate students. The university contains nine colleges and institutes, including schools of engineering, architecture, psychology, applied technology, science and letters, business, law and design.
