M-Tech Courses in Mechanical Engineering

M.Tech in mechanical engineering is a master's-degree course offered by some universities in India. The course covers major areas of design, thermal and production engineering, along with a number of electives to enable students to specialize in a mechanical-engineering field. This field of study requires a knowledge and understanding of kinetics, thermodynamics, energy and fluid mechanics.
  1. Combustion and Propulsion

    • Advanced thermodynamics, combustion technology, theory of fire propagation, air-breathing engines and rocket technology are a few of the courses offered in the Combustion and Propulsion program.

Students will learn about shock-tube techniques applied to combustion kinetics; laminar and turbulent flame propagation; flame stabilization; spray and droplet combustion; and hydrogen combustion in supersonic flows.

    Heat Transfer and Thermal Power

    • This course focuses on the essentials and aspects of heat transfer and multiphase flow, the designing of heat exchangers and power plant systems, and advanced renewable energy technologies.

Students engage in projects in the scope of heat exchange; cooling of electronic equipment; inverse heat transfer; atmospheric radiation; metallurgical and chemical applications; advanced coal technologies; renewable energy systems; and thermohydraulics in thermal and nuclear power devices, to name a few.

    Hydroturbomachines

    • Courses in this area focus on the design of pumps and hydro turbines, pump application and a variety of electives, including cavitation, experimental methods, mechanical design and standards in hydroturbomachines. Students undertake projects in design, fabrication and testing of various pumps and turbines; learn computer-aided design, flow analysis and performance prediction; and acquire a knowledge of experimental studies of flow-through pumps and turbines, cavitation, noise and vibration studies.

    IC Engines and Gas Turbines

    • Engine system and performance and simulation of IC engine processes with the design of combustion engines are aspects students will learn in this course. Alternate fuels, engine instrumentation and electronic management, engine tribology and laser diagnostics in engines also are studied, with projects ranging from the development of engines to use alternative fuels; exhaust pollution control in spark-ignition and compression ignition engines; and scavenging and fuel injection in two-stroke engines.
