The Best Colleges in Oregon

Some may fail to consider the Pacific-Northwest when compiling college lists; however, skipping over the state of Oregon in your college planning would be a great disservice. Oregon houses an array of top-class private and public institutions in an idyllic setting that can rarely be matched elsewhere.
  1. University of Oregon

    • The University of Oregon, founded in 1876, is a research university located in the city of Eugene. The University is divided into eight colleges: six professional schools, an honors college and a college of Arts and Sciences. Oregon's professional programs include a School of Architecture, a College of Business and a School of Journalism and Communication. Many students are drawn to Eugene for the beauty that surrounds it; the campus has over 500 varieties of trees, and is located just off the Willamette River. The school's athletic teams, called the Ducks, compete in the PAC-10 conference, and are perennial contenders in football and track and field.

    Reed College

    • Reed College is a four-year private liberal arts college located in southeast Portland, the state's cultural center. Founded in 1908, Reed is particularly small, enrolling less than 1,500 students across all four undergraduate years. The program is noted for its mandatory freshman humanities program and its requirement of all students to submit a senior thesis. The College has five academic divisions, twenty-six majors and an array of pre-professional tracks. Competition to get into Reed has increased in recent years: for the class of 2013, about 35 percent of students were admitted, with a combined math and verbal SAT score just over 1400.
