The Best Community Colleges in the US

In 1901, the first public community college, Joliet Junior College, was opened in Joliet, Illinois. Since that time, community colleges --- sometimes referred to as junior colleges --- have been opening all over the U.S. Community colleges often act as a springboard for students into a larger college or university. They can also provide a student with an associates degree or certificate in a field of study without attending a large university. In 2010, Washington Monthly released a listing if the top community colleges in the U.S.
  1. Ranking Methods

    • Washington Monthly used a complex equation to rank each community college. Community College Survey of Student Engagement's benchmark scores made up 85 percent of each school's rating, the ratings used and their weight in the survey were: active and collaborative learning (29 percent), student effort (12 percent), academic challenge (19 percent), student-faculty interaction (14 percent) and support for learners (12 percent). The remaining 15 percent of the ranking process was based on each college's graduation rates.
