Brunswick Community College was founded in 1979 as Brunswick Technical Institute. In 1983, the school received its accreditation from Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The name was changed to Brunswick Community College in 1988 following a statewide change in community colleges. BCC offers a range of programs including accounting, early childhood education, and health information technology. College transfer programs offered at BCC are Associate in Arts (AA), Associate in Fine Arts (AFA), and Associate in Science (AS).

Central Piedmont Community College was founded in 1963 when Central Industrial Education Center and Mecklenburg College merged. CPCC was accredited in 1969 and also became a member of the League for Innovation in community colleges the same year. CPCC has also be identified as one of the top five two-year colleges in the nation for teaching excellence. It is the largest community college in North Carolina, serving over 70,000 individuals at its 6 campuses in Mecklenburg County. CPCC offers over 100 degree, diploma, and certificate programs.

GTCC was founded in 1958 as a facility to help prepare workers for the rapidly growing technical jobs in the community. However, GTCC offers much more than that today. Guilford Technical Community College currently offers 93 degrees as well as 26 diploma programs and 78 certificates. In addition, GTCC provides several enrichment courses and a variety of athletics. GTCC has three different campuses, with the main campus located in Jamestown, North Carolina.
