North Carolina Technical Colleges

North Carolina technical colleges exist as part of the state's community college system. In 1963, according to Durham Technical Community College, community and technical colleges fell under the guidance of the Department of Community Colleges. In 1981, the North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges took over responsibility for the technical and community college system. As of 2010, the state has 58 technical and community colleges serving its 100 counties.
  1. Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College

    • Established in 1959, Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, known as A-B Tech, provides a two-year public education to residents of North Carolina. Tuition payment options include financial aid, payment plans and emergency assistance loans. As of 2010, the college offers 65 certificates, 68 academic programs, 22 diplomas and 53 degrees across six academic divisions: Business and Hospitality Education; Allied Health and Public Service Education; Arts and Sciences; Engineering and Applied Technology; Learning Resources; and Workforce Development/Continuing Education.

    Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute

    • Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (CCC&TI) began in 1964 as Caldwell Technical Institute with campuses in Caldwell and Watauga. As of 2010, CCC&TI boasts nearly 100 academic programs on campus and online, offering associate's degrees, diplomas and certificates. The college works with the public school system by housing the Caldwell Early College High School and Career Center Middle College and includes opportunities in continuing education and distance learning.

    Durham Technical Community College

    • Durham Technical Community College, established in 1948, provides classes on campus and online. Students can earn an associate's degree or certificate or receive job training in five academic divisions, as of 2010: Arts, Sciences and University Transfer; Business and Public Service Technologies; Health Technologies; Industrial & Engineering Technologies; and Information Systems Technologies.

    Fayetteville Technical Community College

    • Fayetteville Technical Community College began in 1961 in an old elementary school. The college allows students to study online or on campus. Fayetteville offers associate's degrees and certificate and diploma programs in four areas of study, as of 2010: Business; College Transfer & General Education; Energy, Public Service & Applied Technology; and Health Programs.
