Nash Community College hosts a 16-week Lineman Academy each fall and spring for aspiring linemen. This 400-hour program starts with 14 weeks of introductory classes on electrical theory and power systems. The final two weeks of Lineman Academy feature practical experiences with overhead and underground electrical systems. Nash Community College provides tools and climbing gear to students but requires students to provide their boots and safety gear. Upon completion of the program, students receive certifications as third-class linemen. The Career Planning and Placement Center maintains an updated list of job vacancies for graduates.
South Florida Community College runs its electrical lineman program from campuses in DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands and Lake Placid. The school’s four-year apprenticeship program includes 640 classroom hours and 8,000 hours of practical experience. Linemen apprentices proceed through lessons on alternative current and transmissions while practicing their skills as interns. Students can also complete a two-year occupational certificate in electric line service repair with 1,500 classroom hours. South Florida Community College also confers an associate's degree in electrical distribution technology requiring a semester of general education electives.
Trinidad State Junior College coordinates with Pikes Peak Community College and the Colorado Springs Utilities Department to operate the Rocky Mountain Lineman School. This school features a 44-credit certificate program covering underground and overhead line maintenance. The Rocky Mountain Lineman School also features two-year degree programs for linemen and supervisors. The 62-credit lineman degree program mixes general education electives with courses on electrical line safety and repair. Apprentices interested in becoming supervisors can transfer up to 43 apprenticeship credits and complete 18 credits of electives to earn a two-year degree in power construction supervision.
The Construction Design & Manufacturing Department at Los Angeles Trade-Tech College features multiple programs for aspiring electrical linemen. The school’s 17-credit electrician trainee program allows students to complete evening courses in electrical wiring and transmissions. Los Angeles Trade-Tech College hosts day and evening programs in electrical construction and maintenance. The 48-credit certificate program features courses in conduit bending and alternating current practices spread over two years. Students pursuing an associate's degree in electrical construction and maintenance complete 66 credits, including 18 credits of math, science and other general education electives.
