Colleges in California That Offer Fire Science

Schools in California are responding to the overwhelming demand for firefighters in metro areas like San Francisco and Los Angeles. Firefighters also help put down seasonal fires in the state's 20 million acres of national forests. Numerous colleges throughout the state offer associate degrees in fire science, while a few also offer bachelor's degrees.
  1. Crafton Hills College

    • The Public Safety & Services Department at Crafton Hills College offers an Associate of Science in Fire Technology. This two-year program requires students to complete courses in fire protection systems and wilderness fire control. Crafton Hills College also features courses that can lead to a California Fire Officer Certification and the Fire Inspection Academy Certification. Participants in the college's Fire Inspection Academy can specialize in fire instruction, command and management. Crafton Hills College runs a physical agility preparation course to get fire science students in shape before certification exams.

    Lake Tahoe Community College

    • Lake Tahoe Community College confers a two-year Associate of Applied Science in Fire Science. This California college also features certifications in fire science and basic firefighter skills. Fire science students take courses in fire hydraulics, fire behavior and pump operations. The college works with local fire departments to run the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy. Instructors at this academy cover topics ranging from emergency rescue to career advancement skills on the path to Firefighter I certification. Lake Tahoe Community College requires all students in the Fire Academy to pass physicals before registering for classes.

    Oxnard College

    • Oxnard College offers an Associate of Applied Science in Fire Technology. Students can choose to pursue certificates of completion in fire technology for quicker completion. The college requires incoming students to complete a physical ability test before starting class. The 16-acre Oxnard College Regional Fire Academy contains spaces for fire simulations, classes and examinations. After completing the fire technology degree, students can advance to a California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I Certification. Oxnard College also issues certifications in confined space awareness, vehicle extraction and weapons of mass destruction awareness.

    Cogswell Polytechnical College

    • Cogswell Polytechnic College in Los Angeles operates online courses in fire science. These courses can culminate in a certificate of completion approved by the National Fire Academy. The Bachelor of Science in Fire Science requires additional coursework but strengthens credentials for supervisory positions. The college also hosts five-day resident programs to bring together instructors and students. Experienced students may receive college credit for fire marshal certifications and other professional credentials.
