The Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science offers a variety of options for phlebotomy certification in Los Angeles. The first option for skin punctures only requires 20 hours of basic classroom instruction. The second option requires six weeks of classroom instruction, 40 hours in clinical practicum. The third option is for those with work experience under 1,040 hours and requires proof of 50 completed venipunctures and 10 skin punctures within the last five years, in addition to six weeks of classroom instruction. The fourth is the same as the third option, except that it requires only 20 hours of advanced classroom instruction.

The Meridian Institute has offered a state-approved phlebotomy program since 1995. Meridian's certified phlebotomy technician program requires a total of 168 classroom and externship hours. The course includes basic and advanced phlebotomy, CPR and EKG training, human relations, ethics and anatomy and physiology. Meridian also offers an 80 hour course for a lesser certification and a 20 hour course for phlebotomists with prior experience and schooling.

The UCLA Center for Prehospital Care (CPC) offers an eight week phlebotomy certification course. Before registering for the course, you must show proof of CPR certification. The first six weeks of the course cover the basic and advanced classroom instruction. In addition to the classroom work, the program requires at least 40 hours of clinical rotations between three clinics in the Los Angeles area.
