Requirements for Phlebotomy Certification in Ohio

There has been an expansion in the allied health field (including phlebotomy) in the recent past. Phlebotomy certification programs were started as a response to this rapid expansion to supply a standard testing protocol, as phlebotomy training often varied from establishment to establishment. Although phlebotomy certification is not currently required in Ohio, certification will improve your job prospects. Major organizations that offer such certifications include The National Phlebotomy Association, the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians and the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
  1. Prerequisite - Coursework

    • If you do not work as a phlebotomist, you will need to have formal training before you apply. If you live around Cleveland, check out the laboratory phlebotomy program at Cuyahoga Community College. If you are in the vicinity of Dayton, look into Sinclair Community College for their clinical phlebotomy program.

    Prerequisite - Experience

    • If phlebotomy duties are included in your job description, establishments that offer certification usually allow clinical experience to replace coursework.

    Official Documents

    • Documents are needed for proof of eligibility. A transcript that indicates completion of the necessary course requirements, or a letter from your employer indicating the length of your employment as a phlebotomist will suffice.

    Application

    • You will need to fill out an application from the certification establishment of your choice, along with an application fee.

    Examination

    • The exam given by the certification association you are attending generally includes a written portion and a practical portion.
