A+ certification requires passing scores on both the A+ Essentials and A+ Practical Applications exams. These exams are 100 questions each and take about 90 minutes to complete apiece. For the A+ Essentials exam, a passing score is 675 or better, while a score of 700 or more is required to pass the A+ Practical Applications exam. Both exams are scored out of a possible 900 points. As of January 2011, the combined price for both exams was $175 for U.S. citizens.
The first of two exams required for A+ certification, the A+ Essentials exam tests for basic competency in areas including basic hardware, programming and security. The exam also includes questions about customer service and professionalism. CompTIA strongly recommends at least 500 hours of hands-on experience or field time before taking this exam. A passing score on the A+ Essentials exam signifies readiness for entry-level employment in the IT field.
The second exam required for A+ certification extends the knowledge and skills that were tested in the A+ Essentials Exam. The Practical Applications exam features a more hands-on approach by placing test-takers into scenarios in which they must evaluate and troubleshoot hardware, networks and security systems. Unlike the A+ Essentials exam, which tests general IT knowledge, the Practical Applications exam requires a thorough understanding and capable application of knowledge and techniques.
Individuals interested in becoming A+ certified have several training options to choose from. Numerous books and tutorials are available in print at libraries and bookstores nationwide for those comfortable with self-study. Or, for individuals desiring more of a classroom experience, many colleges and community centers offer A+ training courses to the community. Private training centers and schools across the US, many offering a myriad of other IT-related courses, offer A+ certification courses and on-site exams. CompTIA also offers numerous training resources, such as practice questions and an interactive eLearning course, for a fee on their website.
