Not all fashion stylists work for famous celebrities--some stylists work for films, TV shows, fashion shows and commercials. Busy executives and individuals need fashion stylists to help them dress for important appearances and events. Some clients seek style-related coaching to boost their confidence level and increase opportunities in life.
There is no set education requirement to become a fashion stylist. At the least a 2-year Associate's degree, preferably in fashion merchandising, is strongly recommended.
Well-known fashion schools such as Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), Parson The New School for Design, and Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) offer studies in fashion merchandising. Local junior colleges for classes in fashion and visual communication studies are also available. A strong portfolio and network matter more than the reputation of your school.
Stylists are freelancers. You will need to conduct business, market yourself and manage finances.
Fashion is ever changing and evolving. You will continue to learn about fashion on the job. Many stylists break into the field as personal shoppers in retail environments. Internships in fashion magazines or being an assistant for an established fashion stylist is also helpful.
Famous stylists includes Rachel Zoe (for Nicole Richie, Cameron Diaz, Keira Knightly, Mischa Barton), Jeff Ihenando (for Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Mel B, Sadie Frost) and Rohn Padmore (for Madonna, Lauren Hutton, Kylie Minogue, Kelly Price).
