How to Train for a CCNA Certification Exam

Information technology is one of the fastest growing fields. One of the ways to begin your career as an IT professional is to become a Cisco certified network associate. To become a CCNA you must demonstrate the knowledge and ability to "install, configure, operate and troubleshoot medium-size routing and switching networks, including implementation and verification of connections to remote sites in a WAN," according to The Cisco Learning Network. Cisco offers two ways to demonstrate this knowledge: by passing both portions of the ICND (interconnecting Cisco networking devices) exam, or by passing the single CCNA exam. A passing score on this exam will guarantee your certification for three years, opening up an array of opportunities and jump-starting your career in the IT field.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a CCNA practice exam and study guide. These can be found online at the Cisco site's learning network center. This site also offers free online self-assessments.

    • 2

Find out more about the exam. Learning about the format, length and types of questions you will be asked (i.e., multiple choice, open response, essay) will help you know what to expect on test day.

    • 3

Assess your current knowledge of the skills and information tested on the exam by taking a practice test. Analyze the results of your practice exam to determine your weak areas.

    • 4

Use your CCNA exam study guide strategically to target the weaknesses identified by the practice exam. Identify portions of the study guide that will most likely increase your score. Focusing on these specific sections will help you make the most of your study time.

    • 5

Make a schedule. Devote a few hours per day over the course of a few weeks to studying the material. Cramming for long periods a few days before the test will most likely result in burnout. It's best to pace yourself and give your brain time to process the information.

    • 6

Get a good night's rest the night before the exam, and arrive at the testing center early to alleviate stress and mentally prepare yourself for the test.
