How to Train in Teradata DBA

Teradata is an enterprise data warehousing database. You can follow two possible paths to obtain training as a Teradata database administrator or DBA: certification and on-the-job training. Teradata certification can provide recognition for your technical knowledge, offer new techniques for working with your Teradata database and open up opportunities for advancement in your field. On-the-job training allows you to stay at your worksite and can provide practical applications for working with Teradata databases you may not be able to attain in the classroom.

Instructions

  1. Teradata Certification

    • 1

Listen to the free one-hour webcast on the Teradata Education Network (see Resources).

    • 2

Choose your training path. There are five certification-based curriculum paths, including Teradata Certified Database Administrator.

    • 3

Take classes from a Teradata education provider. Typically, the first class you would take in the Database Administrator series is "Introduction to the Teradata Database."

    • 4

Practice for exams. Practice questions the certification exams are offered online free of charge so that you can practice at your own pace.

    • 5

Schedule an exam appointment, and pay the exam fee. All exams are offered globally through Prometric Testing Centers. Exam fees range from $135 to $300 based on the exam and the location. Discounts are offered for volume purchases.

    • 6

Read and follow exam policies carefully. For example, you must provide valid identification and follow check-in and check-out procedures.

    • 7

Take the certification exams. Four exams must be successfully completed to obtain Teradata Database Administration certification: Teradata Basics, Teradata SQL, Teradata Physical Design and Implementation and Teradata Database Administration. Each exam can be taken separately after completing specified classes.

    • 8

Obtain your exam results. Anywhere between three to 21 days from the exam date, you will receive an e-mail indicating that your exam results are available. You can then access the Teradata Certification System and obtain your Pass/Fail exam results, electronic certificate and logo.

    • 9

Retake any failed exams after a 21-calendar day waiting period. You can take an exam a maximum of three times during a six-month period.

    On-the-Job Teradata Training

    • 10

Look for a Teradata internship. Search internship websites or consider an internship at the Teradata company itself.

    • 11

Find a mentor. Someone who will be leaving the company soon or retiring might be willing to pass on his knowledge to you, especially if you show interest in his work. Keep in mind that this type of training can result in knowledge gaps that may have to be supplemented in another manner.

    • 12

Talk to your supervisor about your interest. Often, supervisors have broader knowledge of both training and job opportunities in your company. In addition, your supervisor could add Teradata knowledge to your professional development goals. Your company may have in-house Teradata training or the company may pick up the tab for any classes you take.
