How to Train Pastors

A pastor is an individual who performs church services, such as giving sermons. Pastors are typically trained in religious studies and may hold a degree in comparative religions or Biblical study. However, pastors require no specific training. The best candidates for pastor training are those who exhibit caring, compassionate qualities. A pastor's passion and dedication are as important as his formal training. The best pastors are those who listen to and inspire church-goers.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up a school or place of study. Options for study areas are endless and may include coffee shops, book stores, private rooms at the library, a church or your living room.

    • 2

Familiarize yourself with the teachings of the Bible. Read the Bible from cover to cover. Pick up a few books on Biblical interpretations as well as those on Christianity, Bible study and ethical living.

    • 3

Create a curriculum. If possible, contact a local church or pastor training center and ask for a copy of their curriculum. This curriculum should include Bible study, ethics, purpose and power of God's words and definitions of important terms. Put a large emphasis on individual Bible study, so that pastors can begin to teach themselves.

    • 4

Bring students to your place of study and begin training.

    • 5

Focus your Bible interpretation on three steps: observation, interpretation and application. First, have trainees read a passage from the Bible. Next, ask them to tell you what the passage means in their own words. To apply the passage, ask trainees how this passage relates to their lives. Once you have led the pastors through several sets of interpretations, assign them the homework of interpreting a few Bible passages.

    • 6

Provide pastors in training with study materials such as Bibles and brochures. Continue training with regularly scheduled classes. These classes may run as often as every night or as infrequently as twice a month.
