How to Cite the NIV Study Bible in MLA

Most books and reference series are uniformly recorded as works cited within an essay or scholarly article. This means that, regardless of the title, the source is identified as a specific type. Religious texts are no different, unless the document is not recognized as a holy text and has been published by a private group. For example, the King James Version of the Holy Bible is cited as a book; however, a collection of excerpts from that bible would be considered a different type of citation known as an individual published edition.

    • 1

Insert a parenthetical citation within the body of text to denote what you are referencing. At the end of the quote or paraphrase you are using, before the sentence's ending punctuation, insert a set of parentheses.

    • 2

Write the name of your bible, underlined, followed by a comma, within the parentheses.

    • 3

Write the abbreviated name of the book from which the reference is being drawn, followed by the passage. For example: (<u>New International Bible</u>, Ezek. 25:17).

    • 4

Cite your parenthetical reference on your Work's Cited page. Begin the entry with the name of your bible as a proper noun, followed by a period. Underline it.

    • 6

List the editor's abbreviated editorial position, if there is one.

    • 7

    • 8

Add the year in which the volume was published, ending with a period.
